 African-American gays and lesbians aren't always visible in traditional gay destinations. In fact, on any given summer day, black gay presence barely registers at gay resorts like Fire Island, Provincetown or Palm Springs. Times are changing though, with events for African-American gay men and lesbians growing in popularity. The most prominent of these are big Pride events in urban areas boasting a large concentration of black lesbians and gay men.

That is, until now. Despite a well-deserved reputation for entrenched homophobia, frequent discrimination against gay citizens, and even open hostility to gay and lesbian travelers, there are signs that at least a handful of Caribbean destinations -- favorite subtropical stomping grounds for spring-breakers, straight couples and "traditional" families -- are changing their tunes. |

It started out small with tours from the US to Santo Domingo, which quickly grew to the opening of the Casa de Monaga guesthouse in Santo Domingo. More recently he opened The "A" club, located in the Colonial Zone section of Santo Domingo. Known for their attention to detail, Monaga makes sure all of their guests enjoy the beauty of the Dominican Republic.

And it doesn't help that the local Catholic Cardinal has some oppressively medieval ideas about gays. But there is vital gay energy here despite the opposition. |

 They don't seem to sleep much in Rio - perhaps it's the coffee. They get up early, party late and seem to spend most of their time in the open air, on the 56 miles of beach. There is a tangible sensuality rather than an overt sexuality about the city and the people, it's probably the heat, but it would be safer to say it's just part of their culture. The amount of gorgeous bodies on show (both men and women), and the fact everyone dances so well, (and not just during carnival). There are more than 40 samba schools in Rio, but only 14 of the best get to perform as the city's premier ones during the carnival parades. |
