Beware Of Gay Backlash Says The Jamaica Observer PDF Print E-mail

ImageBetty Ann Blaine in Jamaica writes that whether Jamaica likes it or not, the homosexual issue is very much on the nation's agenda, and we had better pay close attention.

The past week, the media carried the story of a Canadian group that decided to cancel its conference in Jamaica because of our buggery laws, citing its concern for the safety and well-being of it members in light of public attacks against homosexuals.

I wish to put our country on the alert to the fact that this is the start of what I believe is a well-planned and orchestrated agenda against a country that one American writer described as "the most homophobic place on earth''.

It is very important that we understand that there is the homosexual community, and then there is homosexual activism. The piece written by the American writer about Jamaica: the banning of Jamaican artistes from performing in certain countries, and now the boycott of Jamaica by a Canadian group, are all a part of a powerful and well-calculated campaign to pressure our country into repealing our buggery laws, and to force the homosexual agenda down our throats.

What is also clear to me is that the homosexual lobby will use any argument, however untrue, to strengthen its case. To the best of my knowledge, there has never been a case of any tourist being attacked in this country because of homosexuality. As a matter of fact, the evidence shows that most domestic homosexual murders have occurred by people known to the victims, and are often the result of domestic violence. The argument used by the Canadian group that it fears for their members' safety, is not based on facts, and is a deliberate and malicious public relations campaign designed to malign an entire country and to force us into complicity.

Let me hasten to say that violence against any citizen of this country (or any other), of whatever sexual orientation he or she happens to be, is inexcusable and should not be tolerated, and the full force of the law should, and must be brought to bear on the offenders. Public violence against "outwardly'' gay men must, however, be carefully analysed, while at the same time sending the message that physical attacks against them is criminal and cannot be condoned.

First of all, the global homosexual lobby must be told unequivocally and unapologetically that Jamaica is not a homophobic country - we are a Christian country. The fact that many Jamaicans are bad Christians is a completely different matter altogether. For Jamaicans, the issue of homosexuality is a deeply cultural and spiritual matter. In the eyes of Jamaicans, to say that homosexuality is right, is to say that God is wrong, and that will never happen.

Homosexuality is not merely an issue of a different value system, or issues of "preference" or "choice". It is an issue that strikes at the very core of a belief system that is rooted in the Bible, and one that Jamaicans have valued since time immemorial, and a belief system that defines and calibrates who we are.

Culturally, the Jamaican society is not one in which you will see public displays of sex as one might see in other countries. You hardly see it with heterosexuals, and Jamaicans don't expect to see it with homosexuals. As far as many Jamaicans are concerned, sex and sexual preferences are private matters that are best confined to people's bedrooms, and should not be something for public display or public consumption.

My own position on homosexuality is very simple and straightforward. My heart is full of love for all of God's children, including those who have chosen a homosexual lifestyle, but I can't condone the behaviour, precisely because as a Christian, I find it goes against God's words and teachings - from the Creation story through to the story of Sodom and Gomorrah and the Levitical passages in the Old Testament - to the books of the New Testament.

One of the most effective strategies of the homosexual lobby (with the help of its local agents) is to force you into a corner by saying that if you dislike the behaviour you automatically dislike the person. That's a trick that hasn't worked with me. Some of the nicest, kindest, brightest and most creative people I know are homosexuals, and some of the meanest and most obnoxious human beings I know are heterosexuals, and vice versa. The issue is sin, not sexual orientation, and all of us, both gays and "straights" are guilty in the eyes of God even when we don't even know it. The wonderful thing is that God's grace is sufficient for all of us.

The point of concern, however, is the aggressive, offensive posture of the homosexual lobby with its two-fold agenda of recruitment and acceptance at any cost - and that includes blacklisting an entire country if that country refuses to fall into line. The agenda is to influence national policies, as we see happening in other parts of the world, and every single trick is being pulled out of the bag, including convoluting the issues of "diversity'', "human rights", "science and evolution" - you name it. My prediction is that very soon the issue of foreign aid is going to be tied to the issue of "diversity'' and "human rights" (which really now means homosexuality), and as a poor, dependent country we had better sit up and pay attention.

First let me say I don't agreed with you on some of what you have written. Jamaica is the most homophobic place in this world. If you are gay in Jamaica you better hide it, or paid the price for it. I strongly disagreed with some or all of what you have said.I know i am gay but it's not a choice as, if it was we all would have change, because of how we are treated in Jamaica and looked down on. I know that there are people that do it as a life style to get ahead in life. That's wrong but for the most of us it's not like that, and i can see where and how it's going to hurt us in Jamaica, I know as a fact that there are lot of group that would love to come to Jamaica for holiday but, are afraid of what will happen to them, i have a friend with a guest house and his friends will not come to support him out of fair. Homosexual are people just like you and lot of you in church are also GAY, and the ones that talk about it they themself are gay. I could go on and on but i will stop here and wish you happyness and hope you will all will look into yourself and see that what you all are doing is wrong, live and let others lived have a good day if you can.

I was taught to love and not judge. I did not need justice; for I was already guilty, I needed grace and mercy, and my Savior has given me both. I am under a new covenant: The New Testament. To my gay brothers and sisters out there, I love you as Jesus loves me. Therefore, just as Daniel entered the lion's den, just as Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego entered the fiery furnace, I fight oppression and hatred wherever I find it. So in Jesus name, we shall prevail!

I am amazed when I view comments born of ignorance and dogma. If a person who seemingly demonstrates knowledge and prestige tells us that a pea is green, we'd believe that---so much so that we use that as a point of reference. But in fact our ideals and beliefs may be based on unfounded dogma, yet described as man's own interpretation of God's divine will.

What is real is that hatred breeds more hatred. We can surely see that by looking at most of these posts...

First, let me say that I fully agree with your article. Our little country Jamaica should not be a nesting grounds for this immoral act of homosexuality to keep multiplying. To all you homsexuals out there--Individuals or groups. You can use phrases such as homophobic, or you can think Jamaicans are illeterate or backwards all you want. The mandate is simple. You can visit Jamaica anytime you want and be expected to be treated with the greatest of respect and also feel secure as well. Anyone who trys to harm you because of your orintation, should be dealt with. All Jamaicans are saying is: If you come here keep the homosexual business behind closed doors. How simple can that be? Gay people been coming to Jamaica for years without any problems and I don't think that will ever change. Lots of gay love spending time on the Island regardless. Those of you who wants to spread you business all over the place, go some place else.

What a bunch of apes -- no wonder your little island is overrun by murderous, illiterate rapist thugs. An entire civilized world exists beyond your straw huts, but alas you misogynists will never see it with all the pot smoke clouding your eyes. Why don't you all come mow our yards and pick fruit for us and earn money respectfully?

Hopefully this message gives you a little sense of what it feels like to be denigrated. Perhaps it will make you think twice about how you treat others who may differ from you. For every quality about gays you dislike, there is something about a Jamaican that others will find fault with - and perhaps reason to squash with a tire iron.

i would like to preface my opinion by telling you a little about myself. i am a jamaician. i do not believe in the existence of any beings outside of the human experience - god, gods, satan, allah, etc. i am not gay. i take offense to jamaica not only being labeled a christian country but also to the pervasive hatred of differencies in our society. the tollerance of hate incite communities against communities, poor against the rich, dark skin against light, and the list goes on. our language is infused with words that suggest that things that we don\'t like should be destroyed, killed, burnt, etc. i wish i could write my comments in patois because the words would resonate more. however, intollerance of so many things have led to a country that is out of control. i wish for the day that jamaica will embrace enlightenment as vehemently as it embraces the religion of our former slave masters.

Jamaica and Jamaicans MUST stand up for what we believe in. We are a christian nation with Godly beliefs, morale and standards. Regardless of how the world sees it, same sex relationship is WRONG and we will not tolerate or accept it due to outside forces threathening with economical games. We have overcomed many obstacles and we will continue to do so. I call upon our leaders not to accept this or any other ungodly demands as it will only bring bad blessings on our Island. We need to teach and preach this throughout our country and ensure we remain straight. For our citizens who have or is living abroad, I ask that you leave this dirty act in your foreign counrty and refrain to promote this dirty act on the Black, Yellow and Green.

Homosexuality is not about sex acts so much as who one falls in love with. It is found within 478 species.Your country's full acceptance of incredibly barbaric murders of gays places Jamaica in the same moral zone as many Islamic countries and demonstrates an utter lack of civilized perspectives, tolerance or compassion. The bigotry recently ordered by the minister of ....education??, is sen as the final straw, and Jamaica will henceforth subjected to every effort at ostracization and the global encouragement of permanent boycotts. PERMANENT.

I have read carefully your article and find it quite interesting. As a christian I do agree with you wholeheartedly that homosexuality is a sin one that the Bible clearly negates. God loves everyone and we too must love everyone regardless of his/her sexual preference. No one should be violently attacked or murdered for his sexual preference. Jamaicans are warm people but asking them to condone homosexuality is asking them to deny that they are Jamaicans something of which they are so proud. I firmly believe that these so called first world countries are trying a new form of imperialism. They want us to accept what they have accpet becuase they had no backbone to defend their sacred constitution which was established upon biblical principles. They have allowed these gay activists and homosexual to infiltrate thier society and I firmly believe these very same persons have a mission to homosexualise or better yet "battymanise" to entire world. Hold up yuh head high and continue being proud. We naw bow to no satanic pressure a Jah alone wi serve and promote.

I'am shocked that a nation in the western world, that claims to be god fearing, chistian brotherhood could condone such crimes agianst any group of people, be it through new thugish reggae, homophobic police, or out of date cultural practices. Is this Jamaica, a new modern island paradise nation, or is it some new christian dictatorship with outdated, islamic like, social standards. I have been to Jamaica once, in 1998, and I felt unsafe once we left our hotel compound. Not only unsafe because I'am gay, but because I was white, and a tourist. We were accousted for money and were expected to be rich Americans. When we refused, or tried to avoid the situtation, we were heckeled with anti-American insults. At a small market we apporach by a group of local youth and the phrase "red mum" ( the word murder backwards), and others such as buggers must die, were spoken to us in low tones. It was at this point that we decided to return to our hotel compound and stay for the remaing duration of our stay. Not all Americans are rich. Very few are rich, and most have to work in a very competetive job market, we have to work hard and save for vactions, that do not always occur every year. Many
Americans can not even to take a vaction, and very few more can afford a vaction abroad. Many of the Jamaicans I meet here in the US seem to have the cultural attitudes towards homosexuals and whites, that I experience first hand in Jamaica, and are in general unfriendly toward whites and as a whole, and tend to stay isolated communities of mostly African Americans. I do not believe that Jamaica is being confronted with a gay agenda, but is being confronted with the need to become to modern nation of the western world. I'm only hope for the people of Jamaica is that they can become as warm. friendly and inviting to all people, in the hopes to achieve economic sucess through which the standard of living fpr many Jamacians may be rasied from that of povertry level. I would love to visit Jamacia agian someday, but only if out of date cultural standards can be updated to that of a civilized modern nation. Thank you, a gay New Yorker.

I do agree with you. We need to open our eyes. The Bible says we should not be ignorant of the \"wiles\" of the devil. This his one of his ploys. Sad to say that persons in our local media are very much trying to make us believe that once we do not condone with a particular lifestyle it means that we have a phobia.
john henry thomas   |Registered67.70.38.xxx |03-09-2007 09:22:33
The homosexuallobby is well organized and will utilize every means at their disposal to silence or intimidate those who do not accept their lifestyle or agenda.

I encourage jamaicans to be strong and resolute in their convictions and not be intimidated by those who seek to use economic blackmail to silence dissent. Isn't interesting that a community who claim to have experienced centuries of repression are now trying to do the same to those who hold opposing views. Thus, the homosexuals by seeking to silence dissent is engaging in a form of reverse discrimination.

While I don't condone violence of any form and particularly against homosexuals, we reserve the right to stand up for what we believe. In the words of that famous Jamaican,"Get up, stand up, stand up for your right." And standing up for our right means saying "no" to the aggressive homosexual agenda! No amount of political or economic pressure or blackmail will silence us.

In reading your article, I do agree with your comments that Jamaica is a christian country. When we speak or view a relationship we are referring to hetrosexual ( male and female), base on our christian principes. To accepted same sex replatioship is to say in the book of Genesis that God created Adam and Steve. They should be fruitful and multiple.

With this, I say, that the practice of such an act is wrong that will not go unpunished unless those person repent of their sins.
