Gay Jamaican Petition PDF Print E-mail
Caribbean - Jamaica
Monday, 11 September 2006 20:42

On June 5, 2001, the Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals and Gays (JFLAG), made a historic presentation to the Jamaican Parliament (the Joint Select Committee on the Charter of Rights) to make the case for protecting Jamaicans from discrimination on the ground of sexual orientation. Readers may be aware that the Jamaican Constitution does not provide protection from discrimination on the ground of sexual orientation.

JFLAG believes that sexual orientation "ought properly to be brought under the protective umbrella of the anti-discrimination clause with our Bill of Rights since gays, lesbians and bisexuals are being marginalized by society, and are not being afforded the rights of legal equality and privacy by our government".

On behalf of JFLAG, we would greatly appreciate it if you could sign this petition to be presented to the Jamaican government. We want to show them that the outside world is concerned about what is happening to our brothers and sisters in JA.

Read about what's happening in Jamaica.

  1. Out Of Time - Two people killed as a result of the chart-topping dance hall tune, Chi Chi Man.

  2. Horror In Jamaica - 16 Prisoners killed and 40 injured in anti-gay attacks at St. Catherine's District Prison and Kingston's General Penitentiary in August 1997.

  3. Killings and Violence by Police: How many more Victims?

  4. Taking a Stand Against Homophobic Violence.

Tell me what you brag of and I shall tell you what you lack of!
I guess situation in Jamaica is no different as from many other countries. This is simply called "machismo" and we all know that those who brag being very machos is because they do not feel so sure and need to ressure their identity. I may guess "Homo" population is a vey high percentage in the Island. I have been there and, blue eyes and light hair and $ make a big difference in their treatment and behaviour, mostly when you are masculine and accepted.
A socila local problem is seing by locals in their own way, but for foreigners is felt and lived differently.
