Every time, I watch the gay news or read about celebrations of Gay Pride from all over the world, as a gay man living and working in Nigeria I feel left out. Well, I have been to many gay pride all over the world, a few friends from Nigeria recently had the luck to travel to a place where there is a gay pride, New York, Chicago, London etc to mention a few, the fact remains that many LGBT Nigerians who are not privileged are stuck to reviews and dreams of reading about other peoples Gay Pride.

We are making a call to as many LGBT people in Nigeria that will like a Gay Pride Nigeria to discuss a possibility of a Gay Pride in Nigeria and what that means to LGBT people in Nigeria.

Let us discuss strategies, look at the possible dates, location, march route etc.

If you are interested we are planning a forum to discuss these issues, set up a panel/committee for a possible historical Gay Pride event. My partner and I lived in a mixed-race relationship for over nine years under apartheid; we were both activists in our freedom struggle, and he was killed by apartheid agents in 1993 while on his way home to his village. Our love was made stronger by the appalling things that were done to us ... simply being gay was a crime, and being of mixed-race .... well, it was hell at times.

But no matter was done to Sipho and me, we never lost sight of our ultimate goal, the freedom of all South Africans. Today South Africa has, probably, the most gay-friendly constitution in the world, and although Sipho did not live to see the freedom that we both longed for, I know that he regarded the sacrifices we made as well worth it - we both knew that we might die in our freedom struggle.

Please know that from me, here in South Africa, come words and feelings of support for your own struggle for gay rights there in Nigeria. Never give up! It might take a long time, but victory will come.

My love to all of you who face these awful hardships, and please know that my thoughts and my compassion are with you. And, I know that Sipho, too, sends the same love to you from where he now is.

May I please copy this posting of yours, or place a link to it, on my multiply and facebook blogs? I have also taken the liberty of forwarding this page to the gay students' society at The University of the Witwatersrand.
