Africa - Nigeria

The story was run frontpage headline news yesterday afternoon in a journal called PM News a notorious tabloid known for scandalous stories. This happened after I recorded an interview with Inspire Africa at their studio in Lagos, on Monday.

The background for the programme is a collection of numerous interviews of gay and lesbian people which was part of a documentary in Africa to change attitude of people towards sexual preferences. Nigeria like most African nation will certainly be a difficult place to deal with the issues of homosexuality.

Please read the article here

As we know homosexuality is not a subject the media any where in the world write about in such a good way. The stories printed in the papers yesterday about me are first incorrect, I did not give an interview to the Journalist, two people approached me asking for interviews and my pictures, I declined.

I have spoken to Mo Abudu, I am considering civil litigation against the paper for a possible defamation of character, what was printed in my opinion was malicious and should I decide or be advised that a court injunction or at least attempt to sue the paper, this will be an expensive experiment and God knows it will also be the begin of changes.

What were printed in the paper I understand are not the views of the production company or the Host/Executive producer Mo Abudu. I have asked them to investigate how the Photo used in the news were taken from a closed recording programme.

The paper claimed that I said/admitted in the interview a number of things. Mo Abudu in the interest of her work should also refute the comments as she and the show was quoted incorrectly.

I have not hidden my sexual orientation for many years which has been a subject to print media globally, visual journalism especially on the internet and foreign media.

My concern is for personal safety whilst trying to carry on with daily work, life and the mission of Metropolitan Community churches. There are 15 million LGBT people to reach in Nigeria, if we are honest.

I want to alert you on the current situations, if there are any further headlines or incidence I will contact you, if I feel at any time my life or any one else in the community is in danger as a result of this news or documentary I will let you know.

I am currently modifying my personal security arrangements.

Please hold me and House Of Rainbow church community in your prayers, these are trying periods for our ministry.

My last sermon was titled “This Little Light of Mine”, Please pray that people will stand and let their lights shine, as we stand together with all our little lights, with every additional light it gets brighter. Thanks

In addition to your prayers, please take time to add your comment to the webpage of the News Paper online and pass it to your group, church or friends.

I am grateful for the positive views posted on the website following the story. Please kindly get more people to post their views.

Just like Obi said if you are so against gay people then what the hell are you doing on this site?? Sounds like another closet case who can't accept what they are...

I must commend Rev Jide for his outstanding work and bravery. Whenever I hear about people like him it helps put things in perspective for me.

God bless you Rev Jide.

It is very unfortunate that some Nigerians are now profesing to be homosexuals. When will this need to copy foreigners end? I had heard about gays and lesbians in Nigeria, but i did not believe that it was true. Jide Macauly or whatever he calls himself should be ashamed of himself. I am so happy that he has no support from his family members. "JIDE, PLEASE GO BACK TO LONDON AND CONTINUE WITH YOUR LIFE STYLE OVER THERE. WE DO NOT WANT YOU IN NIGERIA"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jide Macaulay, but must you use the bible to buttress your choice of sexuality which is abiblical? Because if you want to use that premise to support this, you are inadvertently laying the foundation for your position to be buried by people using the same bible to buttress their position against homosexuality. This is either a choice that you haave made or a situation you have found yourself in due to an abnormality whether you choose to accept it or not. It is not natural and you don't have to seek help. But to expect people to accept your warped lifestyle as the gospel truth is taking it too far and making mockery of the christendom you claim to belong to. You folks should stop your attempt at manipulating people by calling people homophobes for pointing out that homosexualism is not normal. Nigerians like to experiment with everything they are intorduced to. This makes it harder to believe half the people who claim to have this abnormality did not just make a choice to be different. Making mockery of the abnormality itself. These, from my experience, are the once who shout the loudest about discrimination. Should we all accept this as a norm just because a bunch of sick people claim to be discriminated against rather than seek therapy and healing? Do we also accept bestiality as the norm too then? Where do we draw the line between going with modernity and violating the basic human norms?

I pray to God your souls to heal.

Prince Thanks so much, I know that reactions is Nigeria are gathering, and immeasurable support from overseas. I will be off to Abuja next week where a number of LGBT activist and allies will gather to further discuss the abuse and possibly call the government to be more proactive in protecting LGBT Nigerians.

I believe that we are making History and further changing the world with our action, I promise I will stay safe. love always Jide

Having read the above article, I can only commend Rev. Jide MacCaulay. I know the reverend personally and I can say he is one of the most upstanding person I know. With a lot of compassion and time for people, he listens and cares about the people around him.

He has now confirmed to me that he is a brave man who will stand up for himself and be strong for the ones who cannot be.

For those of you talking about Sodom and Gomorrah, let me say this: You don’t understand the concept of Sodom and Gomorrah. To think that one gay man looking to enrich the lives of people are a threat just goes to show you how illiterate you are. There are many things in Nigeria to be saved from but the Rev is not one of them.

Rev. Jide, I hail you.

Bigotry is bigotry, regardless of where it's coming from. Anti-gay fundamentalists continue to selectively use regulations like Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 to support their condemnation of gay and lesbian people. The Bible also prohibits sex during menstruation in the very same chapters (Lev 18:19; 20:18), but few Christian conservatives have mounted a campaign to expel people who violate that commandment.

The churches do not make much of an attempt to apply the commands in Leviticus to their life. They enthusiastically and openly embrace those parts of the Bible which affirm and justify their own personal, pre-existing prejudice against gay people, while declining to become as enthusiastic about verses like "For everyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother. His blood shall be upon him.” Imagine what would happen today if we killed every child who was disrespectful to his parents. Fundamentalists explain this verse away, saying that it is part of the Old Levitical Holiness Code and is not meant to be taken literally.

After all, how many times have you heard a fundamentalist say that eating shellfish was an abomination? (Leviticus 11:10) But they sure don't hesitate to say it about gay people, do they? For Christians who feel Calvary wipes away the need to keep the laws in Leviticus, enforcing Levitical laws on gays and lesbians is grossly inconsistent theology. Those Christians who wish to enforce the laws of Leviticus upon gay people need to admit their theology is very inconsistent and is potentially flawed. The bible didn't even mention Lesbians, yet they are just as ostracized as gay men.

Most Christians do not apply commands in Leviticus to their lives. They believe these laws are not binding on Christians. They do not believe they are under obligation to perform ritual hand washing, to refrain from eating pork or to abstain from sex during a woman’s period.

Leviticus 20:13: If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood [shall be] upon them.

The context of this verse is very much like the context of Leviticus Chapter 18. The authors of the New Jerome Biblical Commentary point out that Chapter 20 outlines the sanctions placed on people who violated the commands in Leviticus Chapter 18. That means the sanctions listed in Chapter 20 against same-gender sexual relationships are about sanctions placed on those who worship other gods.

We are not sure how much of an issue sex between men was at this time. The Jewish commentator Bamberger, in his commentary on Leviticus, mentions that there is no record of the death sentence being carried out by Jewish people for violating this prohibition.

This text speaks to gay people. God is calling gay people to stop the self-destructive sin of worshipping other gods. This sin robs gay people of life, of the joy of living. Gay people can heal and become healing agents when they refuse to worship pagan gods. Those pagan gods include the god of public opinion - doing what society expects, the god of family approval - doing what one's family wants, the god of church blessing - acting exactly how the church demands and the god of following abusive or deceived pastors - attending the churches of abusive pastors and supporting their ministry with offerings. When gay people turn away from these harmful gods, they can serve the True God and humanity with liberty.
