HIV and Aids

What is HIV?

HIV - Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is a virus that attacks the immune system in the body, making it weaker, therefore, harder for your body to fight infection.

What is the difference between HIV and AIDS - AIDS stands for Immuno Deficiency Syndrome. You have AIDS when HIV has made your body's defence system weak and therefore, your body has not been able to fight off other common infections.

Does everyone with HIV get AIDS?  Research shows that most people who are HIV-positive do develop AIDS, but when this happens varies a great deal and depends on the person's own immune system.
