The Equality Bill currently before parliament will not prevent schools from discriminating against lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils.

A last minute amendment by Lord Alli merely gives the government the opportunity to introduce such protection at a later date, in the form of regulations. No time scale is specified, and the government is free to ignore the option if it wishes.

Nigel Tart, a spokesperson for Schools Out, commented:

The government is conning us, to suggest that Lord Alli’s amendment will protect LGB people. The Equality Bill is set to give comprehensive rights to religious groups, and I worry that the government’s deliberate two-speed approach will give the green light to faith schools to expel pupils for their sexuality.

A few years ago, I was sacked by a Christian headmaster. Fortunately, I had the backing of my union and the personal support of friends in Schools Out. Imagine the devastation this would cause a teenager, often with no suportive friends or family, stuggling to come to terms with their sexuality!
