What if you lived in a world where your true identity was a mystery – a world governed by sexuality? Homoria is a peaceful city – but you must abide by its rules. Kale is only eighteen years old, and the city’s ways are easy enough to understand, but to him, they are near impossible to obey. He is simply different, and finding himself paired with one he could never love, he leaves behind him a life of luxury and promise. Finally, he revels in the joys of love, but even that brings much pain… He refuses to allow others to decide his destiny; where he abides…even who he chooses to love. Unsure of his identity, he is left to struggle in an entangled web of surprises and danger. Homoria is a truly excellent story, very cleverly written, and masterfully executed. The development of the main character is nicely done, as he realises that he is "different" from the way society expects him to behave, sexually. The idea of persecution, imprisonment, perhaps even death, for one's sexuality is an idea that, in today's society, is all too familiar, but this boy lives in a land where his desires don't seem prohibitive to us, only to his society. We empathise with him, hoping that his fight to live his life outside the majority becomes a reality. In doing so, this story gives an amazing insight to what our society's "social outcasts" must feel like.
