Black Lesbians and Gays Celebrate Community Heroes

In a challenge to the coverage of Black same gender loving people as merely victims of homophobia and racism, this year’s Black LGBT Community Awards were held in London on 20th September 2008 to celebrate those who have made a difference to their communities.

The gala awards ceremony dinner on a luxury Thames cruiser oozed glamour. Ms Kimberley and Valerie Mason John presented the ceremony, giving awards for club of the year, man and woman of the year, advocacy, health promotion, communications, community development, and arts. The award winners were chosen by members of the public by voting at www.blgbt.com – making the awards truly from the community.

Rob Berkeley, Chair of BGMAG, organisers of the event, said ‘The past year has seen a flowering of so much great work for LGBT Black people, it seems only right to say thank-you in this way. We are proud of these people and simply want to celebrate their work and provide visible role models for others.’

2008’s winners include Mz Fontaine, the lesbian rapper, who accepted her award as Woman of the Year with a tearful acceptance speech, thanking her family, friends and the community for her ongoing success. Bootylicious won Club of the Year to top the announcement of a performance by Ms Dynamite and being named in Mixmag as the ‘hottest night in London’. Ajamu won the Man of the Year award for his ground-breaking exhibition ‘Outside Edge’ at the Museum in Docklands.

The awards attracted sponsorship from the Metropolitan Police, Bootylicious, Outburst, MOC, and UK Black Pride among others.

The Deputy Mayor of London, Richard Barnes sent his support, noting;

“I'm determined that London should be a city where you can be exactly who you want to be, and live your life as you’ve dreamed it, without fear. The Black LGBT Community Awards celebrate that freedom”

Spiritual ingnorance

18 Their [a]moral understanding is darkened and their reasoning is beclouded. [They are] alienated (estranged, self-banished) from the life of God [with no share in it; this is] because of the ignorance (the want of knowledge and perception, the willful blindness) that is [b]deep-seated in them, due to their hardness of heart [to the insensitiveness of their moral nature].

Ephesians 4:18 AMP

Spiritual Darkness

21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Romans 1:21 KJV

No Feelings

19 In their spiritual apathy they have become callous and past feeling and reckless and have abandoned themselves [a prey] to unbridled sensuality, eager and greedy to indulge in every form of impurity [that their depraved desires may suggest and demand].

Ephesians 4:19 AMP

No Mixture with Faith

2 For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.

Hebrews 4:2 KJV

No Conviction of Sin

8 And when He comes, He will convict and convince the world and bring demonstration to it about sin and about righteousness (uprightness of heart and right standing with God) and about judgment:

John 16:8 AMP

Bondage of Demons

23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil[a] spirit cried out, 24"What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!"

Mark 1:23-24 NIV

Hurt from the Church

19 a false witness who pours out lies
and a person who stirs up dissension in the community.
