Imani Henry, Female To Male Trans activist, writer and performer originally from Massachusetts. A graduate of Emerson College’s school of performing arts in 1992. 

His theater credits include acting and stage management with Theater Offensive, and the Boston Women’s Playwrights Festival. Bursting onto the Boston slam poetry scene in 1992, Imani was a regular at the legendary Cantab Café in Cambridge, MA. In 1996, He placed 2nd at the Outwrite 
National LGBT Writers Slam Championship, being beaten by 1 point, by "poetry diva" Letta Neely. He is currently, the 2001 Glam Slam Champion hosted annually in NYC by the House of (Emanuel) Xavier. In NYC Imani hasperformed in four theatre productions of cult-heroine & butch playwright, Susana Cook. As a solo performer he has been featured nationally at a wide array of venues - from the Creating Change LGBT Conference to The Apollo Theater to national anti-war rallies. 

His short stories and poems have appeared in noted anthologies and publications as Virgin Territory 2(Masquerade Books 1997), The Evergreen Chronicles, and the lambda award winning Does Your Mama Know (Red Bone Press 1996). His new work will be published in the forthcoming Queer Slam poets' anthology, Butterflies & Bullets as well as in the new Other Countries' anthology.

Social Justice Activism
Since 1993 he has been a Staff Organizer at the International Action Center (IAC), where his work has focused on national organizing of communities of color and the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender movement toward broader social justice campaigns.

His anti-war activism has ranged from opposing US military inventions in Iraq, Haiti, Somalia, and Yugoslavia to fighting to end the economic blockade of Cuba. Since 1995, he has worked nationally within the anti-police brutality and anti-death penalty movement in the US. He co-founded Rainbow Flags for Mumia, a coalition of LGBTST people who demand the freedom of political prisoner and journalist Mumia Abu Jamal.

Henry was the Coordinator for the second annual TransWorld – a people of color trans conference and has served as the administrator for two national lists for trans people of Color – TGPOC and TPOCX.

Grassroots Organizing
For the last 10 years, Henry has worked as an HIV/AIDS education and prevention service provider, directing and supervising HIV prevention street outreach initiatives in the cities of Boston and New York. Trained in the philosophy of harm reduction, he has served as an advocate for homeless & street transgender, lesbian, bisexual and gay young people. He is a consultant and trainer providing technical assistance in areas such as racial, gender identity and sexuality sensitivity, program development and community organizing.

He is a long-time volunteer for Audre Lorde Project, the NYC organizing center for LGBT people of color communities. He is also a board member of the youth -led organization FIERCE, which focuses on the issues of homelessness of LGBT youth of color in NYC.

For Imani, his journey of transition from female to male---with his “coming out” as Transgender in 1997 and then openly beginning hormone therapy --- has been a powerful testament to the strength of and solidarity within the social justice movements in the U.S.

Writing & Performance
Henry’s writing has appeared in several publications including the Lambda Award-winning Does Your Mama Know and the newly released IAC publication, War in Colombia: Made in USA.
Imani is a regular contributor to the progressive weekly newspaper Workers' World.

He is a graduate of the School of Performing Arts of Emerson College. Currently Henry is touring with his multi-media theatre piece, B4T (before testosterone), segments of which were featured on a recent episode of the nationally -syndicated PBS newsmagazine "In the Life." Appealing to wide array of audiences, Henry has performed at diverse venues including national anti-war rallies, The Apollo Theater, and urban storytelling salon The Moth.

He is currently, in his second year as an Artist in Residence at the Brooklyn Arts Exchange, where is developing his new multi-media project, The Strong Go Crazy: The Series.
