LGBT Labour has welcomed the announcement by the Justice Secretary, Jack Straw, that the Government plans to outlaw gay hate crime in the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill. In an announcement today Mr Straw said “this government has a strong record of promoting equality and tackling discrimination and bigotry in all its guises” and it was time for the law to recognise society was "appalled by hatred and invective" directed at people because of their sexuality and that it was “time for the law to recognise this.” LGBT Labour have been campaigning in the Labour Party to ensure this measure was included in the bill to help deter and tackle extremists and bigots who stir up hatred against LGBT people. LGBT Labour used the Deputy Leadership election to ask all candidates to support this law. Cllr Katie Hanson, co-chair of LGBT Labour said: “We have been campaigning hard to get this measure introduced and we are pleased to see that the Government has listened to the arguments and taken another important step towards ensuring equality for LGBT people. “It is important that homophobia is outlawed just as we have outlawed racism. The Government must also ensure that this protection is also extended to transgender people to ensure full protection for the LGBT community.”
