Scene - UK
Thursday, 21 September 2006 04:38

Bristol's gay scene is smaller than you might expect for a city this size, but it is growing. Several new places have opened in the last few years, increasing the choice and variety of places available. The scene is certainly very friendly which makes it less daunting in some ways than the huge scenes of London or Manchester

The Griffin (next door to Colston Hall)
A small triangular pub, the Griffin is curious but friendly. Used to attract theatre types like Daniel Day Lewis. Split over three levels, it is a tightly packed, traditional gay hangout that pumps out disco dirge. Upstairs at weekends is home to Bristol's first Dutch style cruise bar with occasional theme nights for those with particular tastes. Very much a locals pub, the Griffin is interesting, but not for the faint hearted.

The Cottage
It seems no gay scene is complete without that old cliché - a sauna. As none of us have been, there's not much we can say about it, but if you go, feel free to let us know what it was like!
