Gay Somalis in London Launch Community Website PDF Print E-mail

ImageA new website, Somali Gay Community, has been launched to serve the small gay Somali community in London – and beyond. It is believed to be the first of its kind in Somali history and culture anywhere in the world.

“Somalia is an Islamic country and, as they think that homosexuality is a Western illness, we do not exist in their eyes,” said Muraad, one of the Somali gays in London behind the website.

Muraad is the name used within the London gay Somali community.

“Though we live in the West, we still fear of our families and what the Somali community in general could do to us.”

“What our people think about us is one thing, but the thing that matters us the most is finding a way of helping and supporting each other through the most difficult times of our lives,” he said.

When the website became a reality seven days ago, it was a dream come true. And the dream started eight years ago.

That was when Muraad first ‘came out’ to his best friend – also a Somali.

“After a long discussion I told him that I will do something about making information available to all other gay Somalis,” he recalled.

“His reaction was that ‘you will only bring shame to your family [Muraad] – and by the way, how can you help others if you are in trouble yourself for doing something that is against our religion and culture’.

“At the time, if I knew that I was not ill and that I was not the only Somali gay person in the world, I would not have had suffered so much,” he said.

“For us – and I mean Somali gays, there are no gay role models to look up to and to identify yourself as gay, or Khaniis, which in Somali is a very bad insult. It is very hard,” he admitted.

The website itself was two years in the making.

“Our aim is to reach out to those who need us the most and help them,” Muraad continued.

“I am so proud to have found my mates. Their dedication and courageous efforts have made this project what it is now.

“Of course we fear the consequence, though in different degrees.

“But that will not stop us,” he insisted.

The Somali Gay Community website, which is still in its early development, is in English and Somali. [Click HERE for Somali language main page]

Already it contains helpful information for gay Somalis, ranging from health matters to support services.

There is an interesting page on “Homosexuality in Islam” and a message board where members can interact, supporting each other. Membership is free. http://www.somaligaycommunity.org

This sounds like the rantings of a mad man.

The fact that you think we should find ways to heal ourselves just goes to show how much you understand, or how ignorant you are.

Did you choose to be heterosexual? No, you were born heterosexual. Did we choose to be gay, no we were born gay. We didn't choose to be gay anymore than you choosed to be heterosexual. And if you say otherwise you would have to tell us at what age you consciously choosed to be heterosexual. You see, to choose you have to have a choice, and you would have to think about those choices before making a decision. You would have to tell us at what age you actually weighed up the two options and choosed one over the other, and what prompted you to do so. But I guess you won't be able to tell us that.

You think that because someone writes a book make what they say a fact? Did you also know that they did researches and wrote books that said black people are inferior?

No amount of study into sexuality will give you any conclusive results....because sexuality cannot be defined. You think that there are only just gay, lesbians, bisexuals, and heterosexuals? There are a host of sexualities between all of these.

Open your narrow mind for once and stop regurgitating garbage. Find something better to do with your time, there are more pressing problems in the world for you to attend to than responding to an article that obviously does not affect you in anyway whatever.

One thing you have confirmed in your rantings is that there are gay and lesbian people in all professions.

When you have done your own research, then you can publish your results for us to see and we can debate the subject.

In the meantime......spare us.

I think you guys need to stop investing so much time in indulging your every lewd desire, and look instead to find ways to heal yourselves.

Homosexuality is not innate folks. It's a conditioned response to alienation from one's own gender, and has an extensive history of treatment and rehabilitation.

There have been many excellent books written on the subject (see "The Politics of Homosexuality" by Jeffrey Satinover), but because of political correctness, fear of being labeled a homophobe, and the political power of the gay lobby, these facts have been suppressed.

For instance, did you know that Alfred Kinsey, the man that started the so-called "sexual revolution", was himself a pederast and into S&M?

That he asked actual pedophiles to record themselves during their molesting of children and later submit that material for Kinsey's own "studies"?

That the whole point of his "studies" were to move America in a more sexually depraved direction so that he himself wouldn't seem such an oddball?

Did you also know that the men behind the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) landmark 1973 decision to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders have themselves gone on record saying they saw nothing wrong with so-called "man-boy" love as long as it was "consensual"?

That many used to work with Kinsey himself?

That that entire 1973 decision was itself literally the product of coercion and bullying on the part of homosexuals within the APA as well as early gay rights groups and not scientifically-based?

Did you also know that the first study to label the fantasies of gay men and women as no different or less healthy than that of heterosexual men and women was severely flawed?

That its author herself admitted to deliberately screening her own gay male acquaintances to exclude the many mentally unstable ones she knew so that the results would reflect favorably on gays?

And that, even in doing this, the results still showed a marked difference in the nature of the fantasies these men harbored as compared to those of heterosexuals, so the author had to literally manipulate the "findings" herself?

Lastly, did you know that the APA itself comprises many homosexual psychiatrists and researchers? It's not just the gay lobby's influence on the APA that motivates it to trumpet all gay-friendly research and suppress any findings that contradict their idealogy.

All this to say that while homosexuals don't deserve to be discriminated against, the general public -- including self-identified gays -- do not deserve to be lied to either.
