
| Putting the LGBT into Lambeth Black History Month |

October 2005 will see the exciting and significant inclusion of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) events within the Lambeth programme.Amy Donovan, Lambeth’s LGBT Anti-Hate Crime Coordinator believes that ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to raise the visibility of the talent which exists within the Black LGBT community. They contribute to the world of arts and literature in the UK and also challenge the prejudice which exists within both the Black and the LGBT communities. We welcome all to these events’. ‘Valerie Mason-John in conversation’. 7-9pm on Tuesday 4 October at the Brixton Library, Brixton Oval, London, SW2 1JQ. Valerie is a talented Black LGBT author who has been called a major new talent in literary fiction. Valerie will be talking about her debut novel, ‘Borrowed Body’, which gives an authentic understanding of a child’s world. It has been short listed for the Young Minds Award and referred to as the British ‘Colour Purple’. In addition, Valerie is the author of two non fiction books, a collection of plays poetry and prose, and her 5th Book, ‘Detox Your Heart’, ways of working with anger, fear and hatred, will be published this month. Rikki’s profile was considerably raised in Britain in March 2001 with the Channel 4 television series ‘Metrosexuality’ that he wrote, produced, directed and in which he played a lead role. One of his most recent works is ‘Bashment’, which explores the controversy around dancehall ragga music and the consequences of homophobic lyrics.
