IRIE! dance theatre is Britain's leading dance company working in the field of African and Caribbean fusion. Founded in 1985 with the principal aim of heightening the profile of Black dance in Britain, the company set out to create a repertory of works reflective of the African & Caribbean influence on the Black British cultural experience.

IRIE! is based in South-East London - a predominantly African/Caribbean community from which it derives much of its inspiration. The company's musical orientations are drawn from: African and Caribbean traditional drumming and percussion, Reggae and Ragga, Calypso and Soca.

Since it's inception the company has created over 20 dance works for touring nationally and internationally, worked with thousands of young people in a variety of communities and has collaborated with a diverse range of organizations and institutions offering the value of it's expertise and experience.

In 1988 IRIE! established and delivered the country's only full-time accredited training in African & Caribbean dance.

IRIE! dance theatre's performance company is the catalyst for all that emanates from the organisation. The choreographic works have been on the cutting edge of Caribbean choreography in Britain.

The majority of the repertory is focused on Caribbean heritage, particularly Jamaica with its rich social and musical culture which has so strongly influenced Black British experience.

IRIE! dance theatre aims to create an organisation able to deliver and sustain artistic activity which will further their goal. To provide education and training, outreach work and performance in dance, which i based on stimuli derived from Africa, the Caribbean and Europe.
